Aaron Merriman wins 800 for fifth straight season

Aaron Merriman, who in 2017 became the first driver in harness racing history to win 800 races in four consecutive years, on Friday (Sept. 28) extended his record to five straight seasons. Merriman got his 800th victory of 2018 with Safe From Terror in the sixth race at Hollywood Dayton Raceway.

Merriman got win No. 800 last year on Oct. 3 on his way to becoming only the fourth driver in history to surpass 1,000 wins in a season. He finished with 1,095, which was the second-best total ever, trailing only Tim Tetrick’s 1,189 in 2007. No driver has ever won 1,000 races twice, much less done it in consecutive years.

The 40-year-old Merriman tops North America in driving wins, with 800, and leads second-place Ronnie Wrenn Jr. by 261 as he looks for his fourth consecutive dash title. Merriman would become the first driver to win four in a row since Mike Lachance in 1984 through 1987.

Merriman has won 320 races since the beginning of July, a total that would be good enough to rank 10th for the entire year. His 118 victories in July were the most in a single month since Tetrick won 121 in November 2007.
