Bad Angel takes 'Over-The-Hill Gang Trot'
Posted by: Admin - 01-24-2017, 10:37 PM - Forum: Harness Racing - No Replies

Quote:Pompano Beach, Florida...Jan 23, 2017...Bad Angel, handled by Tom Jackson, desperately seeking some racing room when it counted, found some in the final sixteenth to score a narrow harness racing victory as the popular "Over-The-Hill Gang" trotting series continued at Pompano Park on Monday night (January 23.)

As stiff westerly winds reaching 30 miles-per-hour continued to pound South Florida, the eight year-old daughter of Valley Victor stopped the clock in 1:56.1 and halted the four race winning streak of My Revenuer (Brad Kramer) by a head with PC's Wildcard (Wally Hennessey) third, a half-length off the winner. The pacesetting She's All In was fourth while Rush N Supreme picked up the final award in the septet.

How fair is the fair start pole?
Posted by: Admin - 01-22-2017, 05:33 PM - Forum: Harness Racing - No Replies

Quote:What constitutes the start of a harness race?

The answer that you probably would give to this seemingly obvious question is that a harness race begins when the starter gives the word “go.” This answer would be supported by the fact that wagering for harness races close as the starter releases the field. But is it really that simple?

While wagering on a race ceases once the starter sends horses on their way, wagering remains open throughout an extended period of time in the run-up to the release where a race could already have been lost for a horse. In the one-eighth mile stretch leading up to the official start of a race where horses follow the starting gate, there is the potential for circumstances to occur that could change the total complexion of a race. In this sense, the race itself already has begun yet wagers can still be accepted.

In what other sport or form of gaming are wagers still accepted after the wheels for that event have already been put in motion?

Thumbs Up Meadowlands Wagering Holds Steady
Posted by: Admin - 01-22-2017, 05:26 AM - Forum: Harness Racing - No Replies

Quote:Business at the Meadowlands Racetrack is off to a strong start through the first four cards of 2017, with per race handle averaging a robust $221,793 or less than one per cent ahead of last year’s pace at this time.

The first two Friday night cards of 2017 have produced total handle in excess of $3 million while average nightly handle is $2.88 million.

As usual, horseplayers have found the winter cards at the Meadowlands to be a challenge, with betting favourites having won at just 28 per cent. New faces in the driver’s room have helped create a new kind of exciting racing. Youngsters such as Drew Monti and Joe Bongiorno have earned the wagering public’s attention, while veterans Brett Miller, Corey Callahan, and Jim Marohn Jr. continue to be a factor on a nightly basis.

Supreme Court ruling keeps Jersey sports betting hopes alive
Posted by: Admin - 01-22-2017, 05:16 AM - Forum: Harness Racing - No Replies

Quote:While not quite the victory the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (NJTHA) was looking for, a decision made Tuesday (Jan. 17) by the United States Supreme Court means the fight to bring sports betting to New Jersey’s racetracks and casinos will continue.

Having lost its case in a lower court, the NJTHA, which operates Monmouth Park, asked the Supreme Court to hear the case regarding whether or not sports betting can be made legal in New Jersey. In most cases, the Supreme Court either rejects a case or agrees to hear it. Instead, the court put the case in temporary limbo and asked the Solicitor General to weigh in with its views of the merits of the legalities of New Jersey sports betting before deciding whether to hear the case.

This would be a great help for the racetracks in New Jersey. Imagine all the players on Football Saturdays and Sundays for the NFL and college games.

Confidently handled by Chris Page, the 5-year-old daughter of Western Terror was sent directly to the front in a :26.3 opening panel.
